Optimizing PEI for High-Temperature Applications in Sports Components

In the demanding environs of motorsports and high-performance bicycles ,components often face elevated temperatures from engines ,brakes ,or electronics. While PEEK is known for its extreme temperature capability ,its cost can be prohibitive. For many applications ,Polyetherimide(PEI),commonly known by the brand name Ultem, presents a superior balance of thermal performance ,mechanical properties ,and cost-effectiveness.DHT specializes in processing PEI for parts where heat resistance and dimensional stability are non-negotiable.

PEI’s Performance Profile: The Sweet Spot

PEI offers a continuous service temperature of up to 170°C, inherently V-0 flame retardant ratings without additives, high strength and rigidity, and excellent resistance to automotive fluids. Compared to PEEK, it is significantly less expensive and easier to process, while still far outperforming nylons or polycarbonates in hot, harsh conditions.

Ideal Applications in the Sports & Racing Sector

Motorcycle/Bicycle Brake & Clutch Lever Components

Internal pivots or bushings located near brake fluid reservoirs or master cylinders.

Under-fairing Electronics Housings

Enclosures for ECU or data loggers in motorcycles that experience engine radiant heat.

Motor/Engine Proximity Parts

Non-structural heat shields, sensor mounts, or cable guides.

High-Power Drone Motor Mounts

Where heat from high-KV motors can soften standard plastics.

DHT’s Molding Expertise with PEI

Successfully molding PEI requires addressing its hygroscopic nature and melt viscosity:

Critical Drying

PEI resin must be dried for 4-6 hours at 150°C immediately before molding. Any residual moisture causes hydrolysis during processing, leading to a severe loss of molecular weight and mechanical strength. DHT uses dedicated, desiccant-bed dryers with strict moisture monitoring.

High-Temperature Tooling

Molds must be designed to operate at high temperatures (often 120-150°C) to ensure proper flow and prevent premature freezing of the melt, which would cause short shots or high internal stress.

Gate and Runner Design

Due to its high viscosity, PEI requires larger gates and runners than typical plastics. Our mold flow analysis optimizes this to ensure complete filling and packing without introducing excessive shear heat.

The Outcome: Heat-Resistant Reliability

Components molded by DHT from PEI are stable under the hood. They resist warping, maintain their stiffness, and do not degrade when exposed to intermittent spikes in temperature. For engineers designing systems where heat is a factor, PEI offers a robust, practical material solution. By partnering with DHT, you gain access to the stringent process controls necessary to unlock PEI’s full potential, ensuring that every part delivers consistent performance in the hot zones of your equipment.
