Using CNC Trimming to Ensure Assembly Accuracy in Carbon Fiber Components
A carbon fiber part fresh out of the mold is near-net-shape,but rarely net-fit.The curing process introduces subtle dimensional variations, and mold edges are not precise enough for mechanical interfaces. For components that must integrate seamlessly into a larger assembly—like a bike frame meeting a bottom bracket or a drone arm connecting to a central hub—post-cure CNC trimming is the essential final manufacturing step.DHT has integrated high-precision 5-axis trimming into our composite workflow to guarantee this critical fit.
Why “Out-of-the-Mold” Isn’t Good Enough
Trim Edges
Mold flash and irregular edges prevent proper seating against mating parts.
Interface Surfaces
Surfaces designed for bonding or mechanical fastening (e.g., bearing press-fit areas) require a specific surface finish, flatness, and perpendicularity that the mold cannot achieve alone.
Critical Datums
Holes for alignment pins or mounting bolts must be located with precision relative to the part’s aerodynamic or structural geometry.
DHT’s Precision Trimming Process
Strategic Fixturing
The cured part is located in a custom fixture using soft, non-marring clamps that reference critical datums established during initial layup (e.g., tooling holes). This ensures the trimming is performed in the correct coordinate system for the part.
Diamond-Coated Tooling
We use solid carbide end mills with diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings to abrasively cut the carbon fibers cleanly, minimizing fraying and delamination at the cut edge.
Dust Extraction and Worker Safety
A dedicated trimming cell with powerful HEPA filtration contains carbon dust, protecting both part quality and operator health.
In-Process Verification
Laser profilometers or touch probes can be used to verify critical dimensions immediately after machining, allowing for corrections in the same setup if needed.
The Result: Plug-and-Play Compatibility
The outcome of this process is a carbon fiber component with machined interfaces held to ±0.1mm or better. This means:
- Bottom bracket shells press-fit bearings without requiring shims.
- Drone arm roots bolt flush to the center plate without inducing stress.
- Bonding surfaces have optimal geometry for adhesive application and strength.
For engineers, specifying post-cure CNC trimming is not an added cost but a fundamental requirement for a professional-grade composite part. It transforms a handcrafted-looking piece into a precision engineering component that fits perfectly the first time, eliminating hours of frustrating manual fitting and shimming during final assembly and ensuring the designed load paths are maintained.
